New Martin Hotel, Colaba

The beautifully greasy Beef Steak and Onion Fry at New Martin Hotel, Colaba--possibly my favouritist eating joint in the city. The place has wonderful Goan (as well as Mangalorean) food at wonderful prices (this here is a 100 bucks).

Reminded me quite bit of the stuff at Oly (for the Calcuttans), only significantly better. Also, the pao adds that extra touch, no?

The joint is a small little hole in the wall place. The place has 6 tables rightly cramped in with benches instead of chairs (for maximising seating capacity, I would imagine). Most of the food is pre-prepared, which might be a bit of a bummer but hey silver lining: service is lightning fast. New Martin shuts down early as well; by 10 if I'm not wrong, so no late dinners here. Also, the last time I went there, they had run out of pao, which was a bit irritating. Of course, these are just minor distractions given the food and the prices. You can go to this Zomato page for exact address details as well as the entire menu.

The Parsi Ambulance Building

The fashionably smart Art Deco Parsi Ambulance Building at Metro Cinema Junction, Marine Lines. The building houses a free ambulance service run by the Parsi community. It commemorates Lady Willingdon, the wife of a Viceroy and from all accounts an extremely popular character to name stuff after. Lodhi Gardens in Delhi is the most famous place that was once named after her before its name reverted back to its old masters. Apart from that there are a range of colleges, parks and institutions in India as well as Pakistan named after her.

About The Bombay Baboo

Baboo [noun]: The Hobson-Jobson, that amazing dictionary of colonial Indian English, describes the word as "In Bengal and elsewhere, among Anglo-Indians, it is often used with a slight savour of disparagement, as characterizing a superficially cultivated, but too often effeminate, Bengali"

Bombay [name]: Mythical city said to exist on the Western coast of India. Primus inter pares amongst India's other great cities by legend. Was also once called Bambai. Frequently confused with Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra.

From Calcutta, I now find myself in Bombay. This blog catalogues my explorations of the city.
